How to Get to Shirakawa-go: A DIY Travel Guide
Shirakawa-go is an absolute winter wonderland, and it’s no surprise why it tops the list of must-visit destinations in Japan during the snowy months. It’s pure magic!
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Shirakawa-go during both spring and winter, and let me tell you—each season has its unique charm. Spring brings lush greenery and blooming landscapes, while winter transforms the village into a snow-covered fairy tale.
Recently, I posted photos of my winter trip, and many of you asked for tips on how to get there, especially if you’re planning a DIY trip. So, here’s a breakdown of the routes I’ve taken!
Before You Go: Plan Your Base
If you’re not staying overnight in Shirakawa-go (which is an incredible experience but often fully booked!), make sure you’re based in a nearby city. Popular options are:
- Kanazawa
- Takayama
- Nagoya
Route 1: From Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go
The most convenient way to travel from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go is via direct bus. It’s super easy to find—the bus station is located right outside Kanazawa Station’s East Exit (it’s still part of the station complex).
Direct Bus Details
- Service Provider: Hokutetsu Bus
- Travel Time: ~1 hour 15 minutes
- Cost: ~¥2,600 one way (price as of Feb 2024, but double-check closer to your trip)
- Departure Point: Kanazawa Station East Exit
- Frequency: Every 1–2 hours
How to Book
Online:
- Book through the Hokutetsu Bus website or third-party platforms like Japan Bus Online.
- (I didn’t book online, but it’s the safest option, especially in winter when seats sell out quickly.)
In Person:
- Head to the bus ticket counter at Kanazawa Station.
- Tip: I booked my ticket a day in advance, just to be sure I had a seat. Highly recommend this, especially during busy seasons like autumn and winter!
Route 2: From Takayama to Shirakawa-go
This is the route I took during spring. The process is just as easy as from Kanazawa, but given the current surge in tourists, I’d suggest booking ahead of time for peace of mind.
Direct Bus Details
- Service Provider: Nohi Bus
- Travel Time: ~50 minutes
- Cost: ~¥2,600 one way
- Departure Point: Takayama Nohi Bus Center (right next to JR Takayama Station)
- Frequency: Every hour
How to Book
Online:
- Use the Nohi Bus website or Japan Bus Online.
- (Again, I didn’t book online, but spring was less crowded when I went. Still, reserving ahead is your safest bet during peak times.)
In Person:
- Head to the Takayama Nohi Bus Center. It’s a small building near the train station and easy to find.
Tip: Book your tickets in advance if you’re traveling during peak seasons like autumn foliage or winter.
Bonus Route: From Nagoya to Shirakawa-go
Nagoya is also a great starting point, with several bus operators serving the Nagoya–Shirakawa-go route. If you’re coming from Nagoya:
- Service Providers: Gifu Bus, Meitetsu, Hokutetsu
- Travel Time: ~2.5 hours
- Cost:
¥4,500 round trip (¥2,500 one way) - Departure Point: Meitetsu Bus Center (near Nagoya Station)
I took this route on my way back from Shirakawa-go to Nagoya, and it’s another great option if you’re based in the area!
Final Tips for Your Shirakawa-go Adventure
- Book in Advance: Especially in winter, tickets sell out fast. Better safe than sorry!
- Cash is King: Many shops and restaurants in Shirakawa-go don’t accept cards, so bring cash.
- Best Seasons to Visit:
- Winter: Snowy rooftops make the village look like a storybook.
- Spring: Greenery and blooming flowers add a fresh vibe.
- Autumn: The fiery fall colors are breathtaking.
- Where to Stay:
- If you want to stay overnight, book a gassho-zukuri house months in advance—they fill up quickly!
I hope this helps you plan your trip to Shirakawa-go! Whether you’re going in winter or any other season, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Let me know if you have more questions or need tips for exploring the area! 😊.
